I Description I
This course will provide useful knowledge, including but not limited to, common words and phrases that will allow a traveler to feel at ease in a Spanish speaking setting, without necessarily being fluent in the language. The emphasis will be on Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico.
I Objectives I
- Understand how and why in Puerto Rico it is common to find a mixture of English and Spanish phrases, sometimes in the same sentence.

- Use of correct and appropriate greetings that will start friendly conversations.

- Understand colloquial and slang phrases. Learn how to use them.

- Confidently communicate your needs in different situations like asking for directions.

- Ask questions in restaurant settings and stores.

I Professors I
Igri Rosado
Professor Igri Rosado has over thirty (30) years of teaching experience in Puerto Rico. She has a bachelor s and master s degrees in Business Administration from the University of Puerto Rico. She also received certifications as a Teacher Coordinator of Vocational Programs and Coordinator of Technical Programs. She has completed credits leading to the degree of Doctorate in the area of Business Administration as well as credits from the School of Law of the University of Puerto Rico.
Igri began working as a teacher in a Vocational Marketing Education Program of Puerto Rico’s Department of Education and a few years later she went on to work at the Postsecondary Level at the Technological Institute of Puerto Rico, San Juan Campus. Afterwards, she directed the Puerto Rico Aviation Maintenance Institute (PRAMI), Government of Puerto Rico until her retirement.
As a lifelong learner, Igri is constantly looking for ways to learn new things. Igri is known for her cheerful personality and her effective use of humor as a teaching tool.
Esther Barrera
Ms. Barrera has more than 30 years of professional experience in education. She has a master’s degree in industrial psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Puerto Rico. She’s completely fluent in both English and Spanish and is beginning to study French. As part of her experience in education, she has held various faculty and alumni related positions in one of San Juan’s most prestigious schools.
During her long career, she has taught multiple courses, including Psychology, AP Psychology, English Literature, Ancient World History, as well as Computer Literacy, Yearbook and Guidance classes. Psychology students were given techniques for stress control, relaxation, and guidelines for helping them apply critical thinking in various situations.
While Ms. Barrera has worked in different areas, such as Interpersonal Relations Counselor within the Puerto Rico Housing Bank and Finance Agency, it is in education where she has had her most significant achievements, earning respect from both students and peers. She is now semi-retired and enjoying her best life by the beach in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, where she was born and raised.
